“Does it pay to be green? How can that be measured?”
Mariana Conte Grand (UCEMA)
50 years ago, Milton Friedman asserted “there is one and only one social responsibility of Business –to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception and fraud”.
Friedman´s asseveration derived from the economics literature of “Does it pay to be green?” What balance between potential incomes and costs do firms make when they plan environmental actions?
How to measure if it pays to be green? There are main ways: a) portfolio analyses; b) event studies; and c) long term studies using regression analysis.
